Christian event didn't get the attention it deserved Thank you for the picture in the June 7 edition titled "Improving our community," where volunteers are shown washing windows on a motor home. Unfortunately, your attempt at reporting missed the boat. Your two sentence description of "Saturday's volunteer project, Taking It to the Streets" tells the reader nothing about this historic day of community outreach. Now in its third year, ACTION (Area Christians Taking Initiative On Needs) brought together more than 2,200 volunteers consisting of men, women and children from various churches throughout Ventura County. ACTION representatives spent countless hours over this past year, planning and organizing this one day community outreach. These efforts resulted in, at least, over 8,000 hours of services being extended to our local community. Services consisted of wheelchair ramp construction, yard and home beautification, painting, trash and debris removal, fixing fences, electrical, plumbing and related household chores and projects. These services were provided to the poor, elderly and the handicapped, among others, requiring assistance and care. Some of the recipients of the work really just needed someone to talk to and be shown some attention with a caring touch. It truly was a day to remember. I believe it is important that the media understand the significance of providing complete and accurate reporting, especially events such as this, where thousands of lives in the community were touched by the gift of giving and the joy of receiving. Hopefully this input will be an encouragement to the Acorn, its staff and the thousands of volunteers who participated in "Taking It To The Streets." Bob Cashier Thousand Oaks |
