Hiking and safety tips The National Park Service offers the following tips for hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. +Water is life. Carry plenty of water and drink it. One or more quarts should be enough for short walks. Longer hikes require more than one quart of water. Alcohol isn't a good substitute for water. +Never hike alone. Use the buddy system so someone can go for help if needed. +Stay on established trails. Don't take a short cut. This is how most hikers get lost or injured. +Plan the hike; let others know, and stick with the plan. This ensures someone knows your whereabouts in case something happens. +Wear sturdy footwear. Hiking boots or sneakers with good tread will decrease the possibility of injury. +Have sun protection. Wear sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. A long-sleeved shirt i s recommended for bright, sunny days. +State parks close during periods of extreme fire danger. Call (805) 4888147 for a 24hour recorded message on fire conditions. +Some national parks service trails close after heavy rain. Call (805) 3702301 for updates. +Help prevent wildfires. Don't build open fires. No smoking in non-paved areas. +Carry a well-equipped first aid kit, and know how to use it. +Dress appropriately. Early mornings and evenings can be quite cool. +The southern Pacific rattlesnake lives in the mountains. Stay away from them and they won't bother you. In case of a rattlesnake bite, don't make an incision or try to draw out the venom. Splint the extremity and transport the victim to an emergency room. +Poison oak grows in shady, moist areas. It can be identified by its clusters of three shiny leaflets. Learn to recognize it. Wearing long pants and staying on trails is the best way to avoid it. +Be aware of ticks. Some carry disease.
