By Nancy Needham nancy@theacorn.com

JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers DOING 'LAPS OF LUXURY'- Dos Vientos resident Piotr Grzegorczyk has the Miller Family YMCA swimming pool all to himself. He swam laps early on Monday. The aquatics program offers lessons for all ages as well as exercise classes and team competition. Visit the Miller Family YMCA member service center for more information, or call Jeff Craven at (805) 480-0309, ext.108.
Families come on bikes, on foot or in strollers to enjoy the newly opened Miller Family YMCA in Dos Vientos.

"It is an amazingly beautiful facility that is family oriented," executive director Jill Shaffer said.

Children as young as 8 weeks old are welcome in the on-site day care Children's Cove, where they can stay for up to two hours while the rest of the family swims, works out in the fitness center or takes classes.

The 25meter, sixlane rectangular pool is surrounded by fencing and landscape. Swim classes feature everything from lessons for preschoolers to therapy sessions for seniors. Any age can learn to swim, water exercise or participate in team competition.

The 2,000-square-foot fitness center is filled with cardiovascular and weight-training equipment that includes treadmills, exercise cycles, elliptical machines and a free-weight area.

"We have top-of-the-line Life Fitness equipment," Shaffer said.

More than 500 memberships were sold the first week, she said. The cost is a $90 onetime joining fee and $40 a month for an individual with a minimum age requirement of 13, and $80 a month for a family.

"Our exercise classes are filling up," the director said.

The facility is a center for the community, according to Shaffer, where people come to feel great and to meet their neighbors.

"We have a lot of vibrant energy here from excited, happy people."

Y day camps and sports camps are offered to keep kids busy during the summer, and teen social clubs and dances are featured. A licensed preschool for about 50 children ages 3 to 5 is available, as are Y Indian and Trailblazer programs,

The YMCA at 320 Via Las Brisas, Newbury Park, is named after Arlen and Tony Miller, who donated land for the facility through their investment company. The city of Thousand Oaks

gave $1 million. Call the Miller Family YMCA at (805) 480-0309.
