School board president should retire when she completes her term

This should be the last term in office for Dolores Didio, president of the Conejo Valley Unified School District Board of Education.

She would be well advised to complete her term and not seek reelection. Some parents would prefer, no doubt, her immediate resignation.

During a recent "We the People" program at the Reagan Library, young students gave presentations about the U.S. Constitution. Other 10- and 11-year-olds attended as observers. The children were also expected to answer random questions from a panel.

That's when Didio crossed the line. She posed a current events question about a panel at a Colorado high school that apparently extolled the virtues of "unprotected sex" and "drug use."

Please note that it was a high school in which these topics were originally addressed. Didio's question would have been challenging enough for much older students, even juniors and seniors.

"Age appropriate" is a concept that Didio has obviously forgotten. It's completely unacceptable that she expected schoolchildren to discuss anything related to those topics.

Schools are already criticized for overstepping their boundaries. It's up to families to address those subjects.

For Didio to ask kids to discuss such mature subjects shows that she lacks comprehension of what's acceptable and not acceptable among young students.

When she's up for reelection, we hope she's saluted for her service to CVUSD and that she has the good sense to retire.

She's offered an apology for her mistake. Some people may accept it, but others undoubtedly won't.

That's why she shouldn't run again for office.
