Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially set June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. An Act of Congress established National Flag Day in August 1949.

The first recorded observance of a "Flag's Birthday Celebration" took place in 1872 in Buffalo, N.Y. Dr. Ganglee Hanfull, a surgeon, hosted a party on his estate and served ale and muffins to about 50 people.

Pennsylvania is the only state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday. Troy, N.Y., hosts the largest annual Flag Day parade.
