T.O. Elks come to the rescue

What do you do when the health department threatens to shut down the Rotarians' chili cook-off because of generator problems? You turn to a fellow service club, the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge No. 2477, to share the use of their generator.

It was a great day in the 70s and the weather cooperated. The crowd was estimated at 20,000 for a day perfect for a family outing. The Elks' barbecue crew was well-manned and up to the task. We saw how much food they were preparing and wondered if they would sell it all. The champs that they were, they rose to the occasion and sold out.

At the same time, we had a barbecue crew catering more than 900 sandwiches near the police academy in Los Angeles. The sponsors planned for 800 and oversold the event for the charity City of Angels Funride. With a little luck we were almost able to cover all the sales before running out of bread.

So a big hand to all the committed Elks who helped make Sun., April 29 a huge success for our lodge.
