KCLU receives three Edward R. Murrow Awards

California Lutheran University's National Public Radio station, KCLUFM, has received three Edward R. Murrow Awards, which qualifies the station as a nominee for national awards in the small-market radio category, according to CLU President John Sladek. The awards came on the heels of one of the station's most successful membership drives, he said.

The awards are presented by the RadioTelevision News Directors Association in recognition of "outstanding achievements in electronic journalism."

KCLU won an award in the Hard News Feature category for "The Price of War," a story about a weekly anti-war protest at a Santa Barbara beach. In the Sports Reporting category, KCLU won for "Cowboys Hit the Trail," a look at the Dallas Cowboys' final summer training camp in Oxnard. The Dallas Cowboys held their annual summer camps on the CLU campus from 1962 to 1989.

In the Use of Sound category, KCLU was honored for "Olivas Adobe," a story on Ventura County students learning about history firsthand by helping to restore a local historic building.

Since the beginning of the year, KCLU has captured five Division B Golden Mike awards and five Associated Press Mark Twain Awards. The recent membership drive, which concluded on March 31, brought in more than $235,000.

KCLU, a community service of California Lutheran University, is a National Public Radio station serving Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. It broadcasts on 88.3 FM in Ventura County, 102.3 FM in Santa Barbara County and around the world online at www.kclu.org.
