What's new in home DVDs Film and television author Randy Williams reviews the latest movies, television shows, documentaries and music programs now available for purchase online or at your local retail store. "Casino Royale" (MGM)- Daniel Craig's successful debut as the latest 007 comes to DVD with more than 90 minutes of extras. Fans of the British agent will get a closer look at Bond's leading ladies, an inside look at the film's numerous stunts and how Craig was chosen to become the sixth Bond. "Borat" (Fox)- Borat, a Kazakhstani TV reporter (Sacha Baron Cohen) is sent to America to file a report on "the greatest country," but gets sidetracked with his obsession for Pamela Anderson. On his way to meet her in California, Borat interacts with a cross-section of the population with comical and at times vulgar results. Extras include deleted scenes and a Kazakhstan Baywatch spoof. "The Natural: Director's Cut" (TriStar)- In this film, nominated for four Academy Awards, Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs on his epic journey to baseball stardom. Besides 15 minutes of never-before-seen footage, numerous featurettes include new interviews with Redford and baseball experts, an intro by director Barry Levinson and a makingof feature. "Peter Pan-Platinum Edition" (Disney)- Kids will be whisked away to Never Land in this two-disc animated classic. Bonus material includes multilevel games, music videos, deleted songs, a sneak peak at a new Tinker Bell movie and commentary by Walt Disney on why he made the original Peter Pan. "Fires on the Plain/The Burmese Harp" (Criterion)- On the heels of Clint Eastwood's Oscarnominated "Letters from Iwo Jima" come two classic films on separate DVDs from one of Japan's most acclaimed directors, Kon Ichikawa. Both are powerful WWII stories made in the 1950s. "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (Sony)- Robert Montgomery stars in this twotime Academy Awardwinning romantic classic based on the play "Heaven Can Wait." Brought to heaven before his time by a rookie angel's mistake, happygo-lucky boxer Joe Pendleton (Montgomery) gets a second chance at life and falls in love with an idealistic woman (Evelyn Keyes). "All Quiet on the Western Front" (Universal)- One of the most influential antiwar films ever made. This 1930 Best Picture Oscar winner looks at WWI through the eyes of a German front line unit. It includes an introduction by Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. "The Ernest Hemingway Film Collection" (Fox)- The dean of 20th century American authors has five of his works adapted for the screen on this fivedisc offering. The boxed set includes not only "A Farewell to Arms," "Adventures of a Young Man," "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," "Under My Skin" and "The Sun Also Rises," but extra features that profile some of the stars, such as John Garfield. Also included are recollections by Hemingway, several makingof packages and commentary by noted film historians. "Secret Agent Man" Megaset (A&E)- Patrick McGoohan rocketed to stardom as the principled agent John Drake. Set includes all 47 episodes on 13 discs of this smart and stylish 1960s hit series about the exploits of a top operative for the British M9 Intelligence Agency. The hit tune, "Secret Agent Man" sung by Johnny Rivers, opens each episode. Los Angeles Lakers 1985 NBA Champions-Return to Glory (Warner Bros)- NBA's "Showtime" arrives in a sevendisc collector's set featuring all six NBA Finals games in their entirety as Magic and Kareem lead the battle against Larry Bird's Celtics. Twelve hours of exciting content. "Fantastic Four" (Fox)- From Marvel Comics comes the first volume of a brilliant mix of 2D and 3D animated action as Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and The Thing fight evildoers like Dr. Doom. This four-episode edition also features The Incredible Hulk. "The Brady Bunch"- - The Complete Collection (Paramount)- All 117 episodes from the 196974 series about the allAmerican life of Mike Brady and his three sons after he marries Carol and her three daughters. The boxed set arrives on 21 discs encased in a shag carpet cover that would make housekeeper Alice Nelson grin. |
