More than lip service needed on traffic We in Newbury Park are well aware of the increase in traffic, pollution and noise on Lynn Road. We've had to endure it for more than a decade, once the construction of the Dos Vientos development on our side of the Conejo Valley became a reality. Due to city planning, politics and good neighborhood lobbying by the good folks along Borchard, we were saddled with 80 percent of the traffic in and out of the Dos Vientos area, as well as the traffic from Camarillo and Oxnard. Forever. In order to mitigate some of the negative noise impact on our neighborhood the developers paid the city a portion of the cost (at that time) to build sound walls and other sound enhancements to relieve the obvious impact on our neighborhood. That was over a decade ago, and the city has done absolutely nothing for us to relieve the extensive noise impact. The traffic and noise has, of course, steadily increased. Over the years we've contacted the different City Council people and the city manager's office. Yes, they have listened to our pleas politely. Yes, they have promised to move on the matter. Yes, they have studied and restudied our problem for years (wasting more time and money). No- - nothing has been done except that the cost of building the sound wall has risen steadily, giving the city another excuse not to act. We have waited patiently and hopefully, listening to the excuses and countless explanations why nothing has been done. The politicians and city workers must be practicing to go to Washington, D.C. or learning from many of the scoundrels purportedly representing our voters on how not to act for the people. So far they've been very successful in avoiding- for over a decade- - their duty and responsibility in protecting the health and wellbeing of the folks along our section of Lynn Road. It's past time that the City Council get their assets together and fund the sound wall immediately before they address the forecasted problems on the other end of Lynn Road. We're tired of broken promises and the increasingly costly delays. In the end, we taxpayers must pay the extra dollars for the lack of concern, action or competence of our city fathers. Maybe they will understand the message in a four-letter word: Help! Michael L. Penilla Newbury Park |
