Teens earn Congressional Award medals

U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly (RThousand Oaks) presented Congressional Award medals to three Ventura County teenagers during a ceremony at Gallegly's district office Feb. 21.

Local students honored are Mona Derentz, 18, Thousand Oaks, gold medalist; Ryan Krebs, 16, Moorpark, bronze and silver medalist; and Lauren Seckar, 16, Simi Valley, bronze medalist.

Congressional Awards are given to teenagers and young adults based on service to others, initiative and achievement. To earn the award, youth ages 14 to 23 must set and achieve goals in four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration.
