Name of new coffee shop has her boiling mad I was extremely offended recently when I noticed the old Spudnuts doughnut location in Thousand Oaks at the corner of Agoura Road and Watergate will soon become the new Bad Ass Coffee Company. Exactly what is the City Council thinking? Gary Wartik, the city's economic development manager, returned my call concerning this matter, stating this is the first he had heard of it. Being an educator at the local elementary school where we stress not to use bad language, I ask: What message are we sending our youth? Isn't there a law about where profanity cannot be posted? This franchise has about 37 locations around the country. Many communities have voiced their disapproval. One such community, Antioch, Ill., north of Chicago, actually had the City Council vote it down, and the coffee house didn't open. What is our beautiful family-oriented community thinking to let this establishment come in? What are the residents of homes across the street going to say when the coffee house puts up its large sign? Residents taking a walk down Agoura Road, how are they going to feel when they read the sign? Diners at Bauducco's, families leaving the ice cream shop: How will they react? When I tell people about this, they're offended and can't believe it. This company has all the right words when challenged on their name. "Our name alone is eye-catching and our donkey is always the main focus of our marketing. . . . It is the donkey that brings the coffee down the mountain in Hawaii. . . . It was used in both the 'Shrek' movies. . . . It is referenced in the Bible." Well, I know it's referenced in the Bible, but Bad Ass isn't. I feel this coffee company likes this negative response and gets free advertising. I feel the City Council is letting the community down by letting this coffee house open. I know more people will voice a negative response to this once it is more known. What next for Thousand Oaks? The franchise owners, Narinder and Nandini Kumar, shame on you and shame on the property owners.
