Book Bag stays open

The Book Bag, a local nonprofit bookstore, will remain open for business and has hired a director of community outreach to support its fundraising and community partnering efforts.

Store founders and directors, Melissa Cook and Jeanne Johnson, concerned about the viability of the store, had made the decision to close its doors earlier this year. However, customer response was so great that they reconsidered their decision and looked for ways to improve operations and financial stability.

"We were truly amazed by the number of people who came . . . and asked us what they could do to keep the store open," said Cook.

Betty Layne, local resident and experienced fundraiser, began serving as the Book Bag's director of community outreach Feb. 7.

"I have worked with a number of nonprofits and am excited to be promoting the mission of this organization," said Layne. "The Book Bag is the perfect choice for me. They have an excellent business operation for me to build on."

Layne will be assisted by Bob and Sue Engler, who have worked to ensure that the store remain open. Johnson and Cook will stay involved as well.

Layne will focus on increasing the number of volunteers and quality book donations, writing grants, and finding partnering and fundraising opportunities. There are also plans to create a mobile version of the store which would bring services to homebound individuals.

The Book Bag is at 202 N. Skyline Drive, Thousand Oaks. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
