Local YMCAs launch fundraising drives

Conejo Valley and Triunfo YMCAs are conducting their annual monthlong fundraising campaign, "Kids Need Heroes," through Feb. 28.

The organizations hope to raise $170,000 to help underwrite the cost of YMCA programs.

"Families that need financial assistance to participate in YMCA activities will be able to do so because of the money raised during this fund drive," said Tim O'Connor, executive director of the Conejo Valley YMCA. "The YMCA has only one fundraiser a year and it's the only time we ask individuals, families and businesses to consider making financial contributions to the Y."

The Miller Family YMCA in Dos Vientos is about two months away from opening. Volunteers will be contacting potential donors in Newbury Park to raise funds for programs for the new facility.

A $100 donation provides a senior with three months of water exercise classes, $250 sponsors program memberships for 10 boys and girls, a $300 donation provides two months of child care assistance to a needy family, $500 helps 12 children learn, and a $1,000 donation sends three children to a weeklong summer camp.

The Triunfo YMCA hopes to raise $100,000 during the drive.

"In 2006, we raised $80,000 but gave out about $90,000 in financial assistance," said Ronnie Stone, executive director at the Triunfo YMCA. "We increased our goal to try and meet the needs of the community. The YMCA will not turn anyone away because of the inability to pay."

For information on donating, call O'Connor at (805) 523-7613 or Stone at (818) 707-9622.
