Drive-by shooting wounds teenager in Newbury Park Gunshots from a dark-colored car left a 17-year-old high school student with a badly injured left arm at about 6 p.m. Sat., Feb. 3 in Newbury Park. According to Capt. Ron Nelson, Ventura County Sheriff's Department spokesperson, the victim is suspected of being a gang member. He was standing outside his home in the 600 block of Avenida Del Plantino when a fourdoor sedan with several passengers approached. "Someone inside the car asked, 'Where are you from?' or 'Are you from here?'" Nelson said. Then, a male voice was heard and a handgun began firing from the car, leaving the young man seriously hurt, although the injury wasn't life-threatening, Nelson said. "The suspects also appear to have been gang members," Nelson said. The victim was taken by family members to a hospital, where he received treatment for the gunshot wound, a sheriff's department report said. The suspects were last seen driving south on Avenida Del Plantino. There have been gang problems at the area around the Conejo Creek Condominiums in the past, Nelson said. Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to contact the Ventura County Sheriff's Department at (805) 654-9511. - Nancy Needham |
