Los Robles to host seminar on cervical cancer vaccine

Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center will host a seminar to discuss whether the new cervical cancer vaccine is appropriate for today's young girls and women. The seminar will be 6:30 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 1 in the hospital's Education Center, classroom 4, 215 W. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.

Board-certified ob-gyn Karie McMurray, MD, and nurse practitioner Patricia Glick, RN, will be the presenters.

The new vaccine Gardasil was approved last year by the FDA to guard against the human papilloma virus which causes cervical cancer and genital warts. The administration approved the vaccine for girls and women ages 9 to 26. It is administered in a set of three shots, given over six months.

According to the American Cancer Society's director of breast and gynecologic cancers Debbie Saslow, PhD, the recommendation by the Federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to provide the vaccine to young girls and women "represents another critical step toward preventing cervical cancer and saving the lives of women in this country and around the world."

For further information on the seminar and to make reservations, call (805) 370-4515.
