For the record Erik Haberstroh of Westlake Village, an avid birder, has pointed out that the bird on last week's front page wasn't a blue jay, but a scrub jay. As an added bonus, he included information about both species. Scrub jays, he said, are nonmigratory birds that prefer habitat with stunted trees: mesquite, scrub oak, pinyon pine, juniper and thick, low brush. They live mostly in the western U.S. Blue jays, according to Haberstroh, are migratory birds with a bold pattern and a crest on their heads. Blue jays live mostly in the eastern U.S. and are typically not found west of the Rockies. Thanks, Erik, for correcting the record. We apologize to any readers who were inconvenienced by our Movie Listings last week. We accidentally repeated the previous week's listings. |
