Likes after-school programs--if taxpayers aren't subsidizing them Regarding your guest opinion in the Dec. 28 Thousand Oaks Acorn ("Americans want quality after-school programs"), if indeed more than four in five voters want quality after-school programs, why not just let them pay for it? I didn't see in Cathie Mostovoy's opinion piece that the pre- or post-election night pollsters asked voters how much they were willing to pay in higher taxes for these programs. If the programs aren't available, start them, volunteer, pay or donate money, do something. Don't expect Congress or the government to raise your children for you. Sure, after-school programs are popular. There are the Boy and Girl Scouts, Little League and AYSO, just to name a few. None of these are government-funded. All of these are run by volunteers, and the programs are paid for by the parents.
This has been just one parent volunteer's opinion. | |||||
