Generous people make T.O. a great city
      During this Thanksgiving season, I couldn't help but notice all of the charitable fundraisers and programs that our community participates in. For example, in the Nov. 15 edition of the Acorn , there was a picture of the Kiwanis clubsponsored poker tournament, which raised funds for youth programs.

City officials need to listen to citizens
      You'd have to live in a bubble not to have noticed the increased traffic, as well as all the other inconveniences that come with overdevelopment, here in Thousand Oaks. Our citizens should have more power in the decisionmaking process when the integrity of neighborhoods are being adversely affected by development decisions.

Mother defends ill daughter from 'zero tolerance'
      In response to Phyllis Benson's letter of Nov. 22, which was in response to mine, I can only imagine how difficult being a teacher must be, especially considering the horrific events of the past few years. I completely agree that safety should be of great concern at schools.

      I have just read the letter from Ray Holm on the subject of filming in Thousand Oaks and wanted to let him know how wrong he is and how right-on Michele Pettes is. Some years back I was hired to technical produce a McDonald's commercial that was to run in the Midwest.

Citizens need to stand up for common sense
      We want to thank everyone for their support and for writing their letters regarding incidents our son and others have experienced under the Zero Tolerancepolicies. He mistakenly left his small Boy Scout pocketknife in his backpack when he went to school and was expelled.

Everyday Math doesn't add up to good program
      CVUSD school board members should vote no when the Everyday Math (EM) curriculum comes up for renewal this year. The California State Board of Education has rejected Everyday Math twice for failing to meet California's Key Math standards, and the state of Texas recently rejected Everyday Math for use in third-grade classrooms.

We need a fun place for our children at Christmastime
      Christmas is almost here. That means Christmas vacations for all our children and young adults. Now, picture this happening: I see cars and buses stopping in front of the former Kmart building, which now is the "Skating Palace." Children are walking through the front door decorated with Christmas wreaths and lights.
