Opposed to the party pavilion

2007-11-01 / Letters

The Rancho Potrero property has had a complicated and controversial history since it was purchased by the city and Conejo Recreation and Park District (CRPD) in the 1990s.

Given the significant growth in our community over the last 15 years, we should focus on what's right for the residents now rather than in the past.

CRPD's past plans potentially included using a portion of the property for uses like ball fields. At that time, the city listened to the overwhelming majority of the residents and equestrian owners and left the equestrian center at its current location.

Consequently, CRPD formulated new plans, resulting in the current proposal for building a large party pavilion in this rural park that's adjacent to a national park. Once again, the community has voiced strong objections to this type of development as inconsistent with the unspoiled beauty of the area.

Councilmember Jacqui Irwin indicated in an e-mail to us that she feels that the city has imposed the current location of the equestrian facility on CRPD, the implication being that CRPD should get some use of the land, given that they helped purchase it.

Do some of the City Council members feel an obligation to support CRPD because they "owe" CRPD?

If so, that's just plain wrong.

CRPD has an obligation to serve the community and its desires. Ignoring community feedback and pursuing development plans will likely ruin a real asset to the area.

The City Council should provide real leadership to CRPD and encourage them to focus on plans that are consistent with the natural beauty of the area and serve the best interests of the community. Plans for limited development of this open space by adding more trails and small picnic areas have been well-received.

Did we elect strong leaders who will serve the community or will personal politics rule the day? Darryl and Linda Heller Newbury Park
