Conservatives have no monopoly on common sense

I read the letter by Danielle Cross in the T.O. Acorn regarding society's moral decay with amusement and disgust (Oct. 25, "Parents should stop staying quiet about the issues.")

Her thinly veiled attempt to lay the roots of that moral decay at the feet of "the liberals" is enough to make me sick.

Ms. Cross would, I'm sure, be surprised to know that I, as a cardcarrying politically liberal parent, have personally asked fouledmouthed, obviously intoxicated, obnoxious, twenty-somethings in a restaurant to "Keep it down in front of my children."

Yes, I even voted for the popularly elected Al Gore, the nearly elected John Kerry, and I will vote for Hillary Clinton if she is nominated. Oh, the horror of it all.

What I find most disturbing about Ms. Cross's missive is that she simple-mindedly attributes society's ills to "the liberals" because apparently they're the ones who let bad things happen by keeping quiet.

She makes this point, yet it was "the conservatives" who kept quiet as George Bush simple-mindedly attacked Iraq to spearhead his "war on terror."

It was also "the conservatives" who kept quiet when Secretary Rumsfeld sent American sons and daughters into harm's way in Iraq with inadequately armored vehicles and uniforms.

And most lately, it was "the conservatives" who kept quiet when Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the CDC, had her written white paper to a U.S. Senate committee regarding climate change severely redacted by the Bush White House to the point that the paper didn't even mention the fact that the scientific community is virtually unanimous in agreement that global warming is happening.

I find it repugnant that Ms. Cross is more worried about a 5 yearold learning about homosexuality- - in an age appropriate way by the way- - than she is about how the current administration is destroying our world.

Of course there is one thing on which I do agree with Ms. Cross, "Parents should stop staying quiet about the issues." Bob Griffin Thousand Oaks
