The New West Symphony opened its 13th season at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza recently with a program of music by George Gershwin, a composer who, in the estimation of music director Boris Brott, should be compared with the likes of Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann and Tchaikovsky when it comes to richness of repertoire. Cabrillo Music Theatre, the resident musical theater company of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, will present the first production in its 2007-08 season, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," with book by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay, music by Johnny Mercer and lyrics by Gene DePaul. The Tony awardwinning musical "Movin' Out" will play from Oct. 9 through 14 at the Kavli Theatre, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd. The show is choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp, based on 24 songs by Billy Joel. The Royal High School Band Boosters will host the 24th annual Royal Classic marching band and color guard competition from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sat., Oct. 20 at the school, 1402 Royal Ave., Simi Valley.
