Spanish philospher discusses language

Francisco Alvarez-Gonzalez, a philosopher, will discuss the link between language and democracy in a free presentation from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Fri., Sept. 28, in the Overton Hall at California Lutheran University, 60 W. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks.

Alvarez-Gonzalez will speak in Spanish on "los origenes de la democracia y los comienzos de la ciencia del lenguaje (the origins of democracy and the beginnings of a science of language)."

He'll explore connections between the mastery of language and the rise of the individual in a democratic society.

Hors d'oevres will be served.

Alvarez-Gonzalez has written more than 30 books. He earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Madrid and founded the philosophy department at the University of Cuenca in Ecuador.
