If crossing guards are missing, call the police

I'm writing to inform your readers about the Thousand Oaks crossing guards.

These are dedicated men and women who help schoolchildren across busy streets. We cross our students from 7:30 to 8 a.m. and from 2:30 to 4 p.m., and some schools have a special schedule.

What I'm also asking the public is that if you're driving by a known crossing guard post and it's 7:31 or 2:31 and there's no guard present, please call the police department immediately and report it. You might just save a child's life.

I'm a crossing guard for the city, and in my career of seven years I've been hit by a car, so please watch out for us when school starts on Aug. 29.

We try our best to limit the times we stop traffic, and we only hold the traffic until the children and guards are safely across.

I'd like to remind them that the police actively issue citations to motorists who violate crossing guard laws around schools. John Holden Newbury Park
