During a recent history lesson on American heroes, teachers at Lang Ranch Elementary in Thousand Oaks wanted to impart more than textbook knowledge to their 140 second-graders. They wanted the students to learn by doing. More ... PATRIOTIC CONCERT- The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West will present music celebrating the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force. The free concert is set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tues., July 3 at Gardens of the World on Thousand Oaks Boulevard, across the street from the Civic Arts Plaza. The Southern California Cable and Telecommunications Association Charitable Foundation has awarded $1,000 college scholarships each to three local students. The foundation's Lee Brennan Memorial Scholarship recognizes students who are interested in pursuing careers in the cable and telecommunications industry. More ... Students at California Lutheran University were awarded Swenson Summer Fellowships, allowing them to complete research projects focusing on various topics in science and technology. The 11 students were selected by a committee comprised of CLU science faculty members. More ... UPSTANDING CITIZEN- Mark Wagner, who recently graduated from T.O. High School, earned the rank of Eagle, the highest in Scouting. For his project, he planned and organized the removal of an unsafe bench from the Conejo Valley Botanic Gardens and the design, construction and installation of two new benches. While at TOHS, Mark was an academic achiever and percussionist in the award-winning Lancer band. He's the son of Cindy and Randy Wagner. More ... DOING A GOOD DEED- From left, Stephanie Lee, Katie Weibezahl, Hannah Press, Kiaya Ongania and Effie Sklavenitis of Colina Middle School postponed the start of summer vacation to collect nonperishable food and other items for Manna, the Conejo Valley food bank. The girls are members of Girl Scout Troop No. 799. They stapled fliers to bags that were donated by Trader Joe's and distributed them to homes in Westlake Village. The girls returned later to collect the food that residents had donated. The effort was particularly appreciated by the folks at Manna because food supplies dwindle during the summer months.
