State science fair honors students

Local students received awards at the California State Science Fair this month in Exposition Park, including the top award for the junior division.

The students qualified for the state competition at the Ventura County Science Fair in April.

Michael Iorga received the $5,000 Arnold Beckman Project of the Year award for the best project in the junior division, which comprises grades six, seven and eight.

Michael is an eighth-grader at Sycamore Canyon School in Newbury Park.

First-place award winners are Samantha Lux, Los Cerritos Middle School in Thousand Oaks, grade eight; and Bryce Kobrin, Sequoia Middle School in Newbury Park, grade eight.

Second-place awards went to Samantha Guhan, Sycamore Canyon School, grade seven; and Tierney Burke, La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks, grade 12.

Receiving fourth-place awards were Grace Ng, Los Cerritos Middle School, grade six; Brenna Callero, La Reina High School, grade eight; and Lauren Franke and Katherine Trockey, La Reina High School, grade eight.
