Immigration law flawed The Immigration Reform Bill, as hammered out between the Senate and the president, is terribly flawed, and I agree that it will worsen the problem, not solve it. Labor unions' stated position that the new bill will depress wages and will create a permanent underclass ignores the fact that there already is a permanent underclass and wages are depressed already due to the existing situation with illegals (versus legal). An average of only 60 percent of children of illegal immigrants graduate from high school, and the reason is not due to our existing immigration policies. Wages are subject to the laws of supply and demand, and between the teenagers and our existing fellow Americans who are disadvantaged, there is an overabundant supply of low-wage workers. We spend so much money on providing medical, social and educational services for the illegal immigrants that we have become a nation who ignores their own imperiled citizens who are economically and socially disadvantaged and truly deserve the resources of our country--what about taking care of our own? The two-year guest worker program will fail, primarily due to lack of enforcement. Since we do not enforce existing laws, why should there be an expectation that new laws will be enforced? That's ludicrous. I agree that the new laws must be contingent on the border enforcement, and those provisions must have permanent funding. The whole family provision of the current as well as new bill needs to be overhauled. Why should the United States be obligated to bring in every immigrant's family, including siblings? If I choose to move out of this country, I certainly do not have the expectation that the new country is obligated to take my whole entire family. Furthermore, what provision exists if a two-year guest worker has a child? Also, what about the arbitrary date of Jan. 1, 2007? Who can actually prove when they came here? The American people are one more time being duped by their so-called representatives. Patricia Hull Foster Westlake Village |
