Buckle up for safety, or risk getting a ticket

The Thousand Oaks Police Department is reminding drivers and passengers to buckle up for safety.

Maximum enforcement of California's seat belt law will be conducted Memorial Day weekend through Sun., June 3.

The police department's traffic bureau is working to increase public awareness of the law by issuing citations and through advertising.

The goal of the "Click it or Ticket" campaign is saving lives and preventing injuries, according to a department spokesperson.

An adult in violation of the law could receive a ticket ranging from $80 to $91.

If a child under 6 isn't properly secured, the parent or driver can receive a "point count" on their driving record plus fines from $330 for a first offense to as much as $971 for a second offense.

California law requires that the driver and all passengers in a vehicle must wear a seat belt at all times.
