NPHS second baseman does his best work in the clutch
      Jack Marder thrives in the pressure situations. Although he's only a sophomore, Marder's resume as a member of the Newbury Park High baseball team contains several clutch performances at the plate.

All-Star soccer team wins title
      WINNING ON KICKS- The Newbury Park girls' U-12 All-Star soccer team finished in first place at the Culver City Sony Pictures Tournament. In the championship game, Newbury Park faced Culver City, a team they had played in the State Cup. The game ended in a 2-2 tie and went to penalty kicks, where the local girls came away victorious.

Locals capture two championships
      DOUBLE DOWN- The Newbury Park girls' U-14 All-Star soccer team finished in first place at the Carpinteria Beach Cup. In addition, the team also took first place in the Thousand Oaks Pot O' Gold Tournament.

Warrior swimmers turn their attention toward league finals
Girls in first place; boys chasing TOHS
      After winning the Marmonte League championships last year, the boys' and girls' swim teams at Westlake High have shown no signs of slowing down in 2007. The Warriors girls' team currently sits atop the league standings with a record of 5-0, while the boys' squad is 4-1, trailing only Thousand Oaks.

      The Marmonte League baseball season has reached its midway point. At 6-1 in league play, reigning champion Newbury Park sits atop the Marmonte standings, but only by the slimmest of margins. Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley are both 5-1-1 in league and each team still has a legitimate shot at the title.

Drootin says he's doing fine following heart attack
      One week after suffering a heart attack because of a blocked artery, Newbury Park High head baseball coach Scott Drootin has been cleared to return to the Panther bench. The incident occurred on the NPHS field last Tuesday afternoon during practice.

Primm, Johnson shine at Arcadia Invite
      One did it by land, the other by air. On Saturday at the Arcadia Invitational, Westlake High's Cory Primm and Agoura's Derek Johnson both put themselves into the national track and field record books- although by somewhat different means. Primm ran a personal-best time of 1:49.50 in the men's 800 meters. It was the fastest high school time in the nation this year.
