Panther girls growl out a victory
      JUST KIDDING ABOUT THE GROWLING- The Newbury Park High School Competition Cheer Team took first place in both group stunt and junior varsity categories at the Showcase of Champions. The event took place at Sea World in San Diego. The girls also captured a trophy for exceptional team spirit.

      The following area residents were named to the dean's list for the fall 2006 semester. +Megan Spehar of Thousand Oaks attends Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. To make the list, Spehar achieved a grade point average of 3.6 or better.

Spring break surf camp comes to Teen Center
      The Thousand Oaks Teen Center and Ocean Glass Surf Company will offer a spring break surf camp for teens ages 12 to 16 Monday through Friday, April 9 to 13. Participants will be picked up and dropped off at the teen center. The fee is $350. Campers will learn ocean safety practices, surfing skills and etiquette, wave and current judgment.

T.O. Youth Commission accepting recognition nominations
      Nominations for the Youth Recognition Award will be accepted until Tues., April 3. Awards will be presented at a recognition ceremony Wed., May 23 at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center. Teens ages 13 to 19 may be nominated by service organizations for which they volunteer.

Sycamore Canyon students take top places at Mathcounts contest

      Every week a group of more than 40 students gets together after school, skipping the movies or the mall to practice a favorite subject: math. It appears practice pays off. Sycamore Canyon students dominated the Ventura/Santa Barbara Mathcounts chapter competition late last month, with seven of eight Mathletes placing in the top 35 of 200 competitors.

Judges needed for Ventura County Science Fair
      Professionals in the sciences are needed to volunteer as judges for the 2007 Ventura County Science Fair Tues. through Thurs., April 17 to 19 at Seaside Park in Ventura.
