Malibu Horizon is a nontraditional, science and researchbased outpatient and inpatient detox and addiction treatment center which offers individualized treatment. The medical director, Dr. Akikur Reza Mohammad, is an addiction medicine specialist and boardcertified psychiatrist/neurologist.

Treatment at Malibu Horizon incorporates all of the factors contributing to addiction- biological, psychological and sociological- and emphasizes a behavioral approach using motivation, clientcentered and experiential therapies, and a focus on relapse prevention.

Mohammad believes that addiction is a chronic medical illness requiring medical treatment. There are many factors involved in the causes and effects of addiction. Biology accounts for 50 to 70 percent of the risk factors; psychological and social factors account for the rest.

All the factors need to be addressed to be most effective in the treatment of addiction, according to Mohammad. Medications are used for detox and to reduce urges/cravings, anxiety, insomnia, as well as illnesses which the patient may suffer from. Mohammad sees patients on an outpatient basis from a private office.

Services offered at Malibu Horizon include detoxification from alcohol and drugs; medical and psychological evaluation; clientcentered and individualized treatment approach; cognitive behavioral, individual, group and family system therapies; relapse prevention and aftercare; daily exercise including walks on the beach and yoga therapy; and nutritional assessment and equine-assisted psychotherapy
