      While I'm a big fan of smaller colleges, many of my students want to attend large universities. It's not hard to understand why students who have spent their high school years in classes with many of the same people would want their college experience to provide lots of social as well as academic choices.

Nominations for teacher of year due by March 1
      Nominations for the California 2006-07 Teacher of the Year award are being accepted through March 1, according to award sponsor Teachers' Insurance Plan. The award will include $1,000 for the winning teacher and a $500 grant to the teacher's school.

Day School open house will be held at St. Patrick's
      St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School will host an open house for prospective parents and their children from 1 to 3 p.m. Sun., Jan. 21. The school is at One Church Lane in Thousand Oaks. St. Patrick's offers K through 6 students a curriculum in reading, math, social studies and science, along with weekly specialist classes in art, music, computers, Spanish and P.E.

Need performers for International Day at Meadows
      Meadows Elementary School is having its second annual International Day on Thurs., Feb. 8. It's a multicultural celebration featuring daytime and evening performances. Classrooms will "host" various countries from around the globe and explore their music, food, dance and crafts to educate children about the richness of cultural diversity.

      Robin M. Kim of Thousand Oaks has received a Fulbright Fellowship. Kim is a student at Williams College, in Williamstown, Mass. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides funds for one academic year of study or research abroad after graduation from an accredited college or university.
