All things considered, 2006 was a good year for T.O. The biggest 2006 story from the city of Thousand Oaks was that three incumbents won reelection. Councilmembers Andy Fox, Claudia Bill-de la Peña and Dennis Gillette will each serve for four more years. For the good of almost everyone, the council will try to be less contentious. All five council members now seem to understand that they can disagree without being argumentative. Fewer personal attacks would be a welcome change in Thousand Oaks. While the council must cope with criticism, some of it vigorous, during public comments, council members can exercise self-control from the dais. If the council shows some restraint, maybe the public will follow suit. Mayor Fox has made a point of welcoming concerned citizens to express themselves at City Council meetings. He seems to be offering an olive branch. We hope residents will react with a greater sense of decorum and civility. Major projects took form in 2006 and will meet their fate in 2007, including expansion and renovation of The Oaks mall and Hyatt Westlake Plaza. Home Depot and Costco proposals are in the process of taking shape. Other stories in 2006 were: +The possible loss of the Conejo Valley Days parade and rodeo. A last minute-drive to save them is in progress. +Completion of an extensive expansion and renovation of the Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library. +Approval of plans for the Two Winds equestrian center and the appointment of a permanent operator. In Conejo Valley Unified School District, the year's biggest story was the appointment of a new superintendent, Mario Contini. He replaced Robert Fraisse, who took a position with California Lutheran University. CVUSD, like other districts, is grappling with the challenge of dwindling enrollment. Money to public schools from the state is based on student population: more kids, more money. Fewer children means reduced funding from Sacramento. All things considered, 2006 was a good year for our city. | |||||
