CLU to host various summer camps Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth is one of several academic camps on the campus of California Lutheran University this summer. More than 500 youths from fifth to eighth grade have come to the campus from around the world to participate in the program. Prospective participants must take tests in a variety of subjects to qualify for the three-week residential sessions. They take one immersion course in humanities, math or the sciences, including courses in heroes and villains, modern fantasy, inductive and deductive reasoning, geometry and spatial sense, bay ecology and biology of the senses. Instead of receiving grades, instructors write detailed evaluations describing each student's progress and achievements in the course and outlining areas for improvement. The participants live on campus and have opportunities to participate in creative, non-academic activities ranging from sports and dance to arts and music. The second session of camp begins Sun., July 16. Other camps being hosted by CLU during the summer include Destination Science, ID Tech, the College Summit and various church retreats. Destination Science camp, for 7to 12-year-olds, has sessions through Aug. 18. ID Tech Camp, which runs through July 28, is a computer camp for 7to 12-year-olds.
