Congressman to discuss the environment The Democratic Club of the Conejo Valley invites the public to hear U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman discuss global warming and other critical issues facing the U.S. at 4:30 p.m. Sun., July 16 at the Hillcrest Community Room, 403 W. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks. On June 20, Waxman and 12 colleagues introduced the "Safe Climate Act of 2006." This legislation proposes a solid plan for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, cleaner cars, renewable energy and energy efficiency. In his statement, Waxman said, "Global warming is the greatest environmental challenge of our time, and we have a short window in which to act to prevent profound changes to the climate system.Unless we seize the opportunity to act now, our legacy to our children and grandchildren will be an unstable and dangerous planet . . . In effect, the Safe Climate Act sets the targets and then unleashes market forces and American ingenuity to solve the climate problem." Waxman represents California's 30th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills and Westlake Village, and areas of Los Angeles including Topanga and Agoura. Waxman was one of the primary authors of the 1990 Clean Air Act, which sets out a comprehensive program to combat smog, acid rain, toxic air emissions, and ozone depletions. Admission is free.
