After much anticipation, large southern waves arrive at area beaches

BIG SURF-Left, an unidentified surfer drops into a thick right at Malibu. Above, broken boards are often part of the deal when braving large waves. Nathan Cool, the chief forecaster for WetSand.com, said Tuesday's large swell produced waves that were double overhead at some south-facing beaches in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The storm originated 4,500 nautical miles off the local coastline and produced waves as big as 60 feet at the epicenter of the storm, Cool said.
