CHP to offer Explorer program

The California Highway Patrol in Moorpark will begin accepting applications in mid-July for its new Explorers volunteer program set to begin later this summer.

The volunteer program gives Ventura County residents between the ages of 15 and 21 (who are interested in a career in law enforcement) a chance to see firsthand how the CHP works. The program also helps would-be officers understand the day-to-day operations of a police station.

Although local CHP officials said they preferred to start the Explorer program sooner-other CHP offices have long had similar programs statewide-it wasn't possible until the department relocated from a cramped storefront station on Moorpark Avenue to the new facility on Spring Road.

Applications for the Explorers Program are available at the CHP station at 610 Spring Road in Moorpark or by calling (805) 5530800.
