Scouts to learn BB gun safety at day camp Boy Scouts will learn to shoot BB guns on June 28 at Fireworks Hill, on city-owned property near The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks. The use of the guns within city limits must be approved by the city council. The council granted the request earlier this month. The shooting program is part of a weeklong day camp that runs from June 26 to 30 at Newbury Park High School. The police department is aware of the program and has no objections, according to a staff report. Certified shooting instructors have assured the city that the BB rifles cannot go beyond the training area due to their limited power. Prior to approaching the firing line, participants learn safety rules in the proper handling of BB rifles. All shooters wear eye protection. A supervision ratio of at least one adult for every three shooters includes a range master and two assistants trained by the Scouts and the National Rifle Association. The group incorporates community service into the shooting day by pickup up trash from Fireworks Hill. --Sophia Fischer |
