Trustee unwilling to learn from his mistakes Your June 15 editorial ("Teachers' union, school board trustee should stop acting like children") is somewhat misguided. It is not a minor matter that Mr. Dunn broke the law. The fact is that the only point to having a union is to have a group of employees speak with a single voice, that they act as a single unit. The union must know the opinion of its members. If management is allowed to bypass the union and speak to the individual members, the point of having a union is lost. That is why Mr. Dunn's (actions were) illegal. Will all members agree with what the union does in their name? That is not possible in any large body. That is why unions are democratic in how they are set up. Mr. Dunn broke the law, he's admitted as much. He is unwilling to educate himself as to what the law is and how he can stay within it when he acts for the voters. How appropriate is it for a member of a board of education to admit he is ignorant and refuse to learn the rules he must act under? What example does this set for our children? If Mr. Dunn is unwilling or unable to follow the law, I think he should resign. Then he could take all the polls he wants. Daniel Presburger Thousand Oaks |
