Unusual musical comedy presented in Thousand Oaks

"Bat Boy: The Musical" will be performed at 8 p.m. Fri. and Sat., June 23 and 24, in the Theatre on the Hill at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, 403 W. Hillcrest Drive in T.O. Tickets for the Young Artists Ensemble's production are $20 and a complimentary reception follows each performance. For tickets, call the box office at (805) 381-1246.

The show has been called a mixture of "My Fair Lady" and "The Rocky Horror Show." Based on a story in The Weekly World News, "Bat Boy" is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who's discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia.

The local sheriff brings Bat Boy to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker, where he's eventually accepted as a member of the family and taught to act like a "normal" boy by Parker's wife, Meredith, and his teenage daughter, Shelley.

Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls.

Director Zachary Spencer has been a musical director for several theatrical companies, including the Conejo Players, the Young Artists Ensemble, Newbury Park High School and Calabasas High School.
