Three Thousand Oaks men convicted of raping girl, 15 Three Thousand Oaks men were found guilty last month of the 2004 rape of a 15-year-old girl. After deliberating less than one day, on May 18 jurors found John Anthony Madrigal, 25, and 21-year-old twins Albert and Alex Albillar guilty of rape in concert, sexual digital penetration in concert and street gang terrorism. In addition, Albert Albillar was found guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor in connection with a 14-year-old girl on the same day. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Edward Brodie will sentence the trio on June 28. They face varying mandatory prison sentences. "There's no way they'll get probation," prosecutor Rameen Minoui said. "They'll have to go to prison." The two girls, who lived in the Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village area, were acquainted with the Oxnard Southside Chiques gang members before the rapes occurred in the Albillar family's Thousand Oaks apartment. Minoui said gang members often live in neighborhoods outside their core area which allows them expand their influence and activity. "Not all gang members live in traditional turf, and we know not all gang crimes occur in traditional turf," Minoui said. As for victims of sexual assault and other crimes, the county makes counseling and other services available to them. Services include immediate and long-term no-cost therapy and counseling and support from Ventura County victim advocates. Advocates offer guidance to victims by explaining the criminal justice process to them, keeping them updated on the progress of the case and even accompanying them to court proceedings. They also inform them of available county and state resources. "(We are) someone there on their side, looking after them," victim advocate Greg Baker said. "Our job . . . is to bring the victim to the criminal justice process with as much care and empathy as possible so they can get back to their normal lives as much as possible." |
