Pepperdine camp exercises minds and bodies

Three years ago Kip Jerger, founder of Kanoa Aquatics, partnered with iD Tech Camps to reach more Generation Y kids that wouldn't typically choose to surf. The weeklong, day and overnight Surf & Tech summer program at Pepperdine University in Malibu allows Gen Y kids to do something fun and physical in the sun, but also lets them focus on their high tech interest.

Additionally, through iD Tech Camps, participants turn their video game and Internet passion into an educational experience where they learn how to develop a video game or de

sign web pages. This stimulates their imagination and unleashes their creativity while also getting them outside and active surfing Malibu.

"This program allows kids to find a good balance of academics and physical activities," said Tina Humphrey, a Southland mother whose two children participated.

"Typically if kids are into technology, they're only into technology. And if kids are into sports, they're only into sports. This Surf & Tech program makes kids more well-rounded and helps them find new possible passions through things they already enjoy doing," she said

During half the day, Humphrey's children surfed while the other half of the day they spent in the computer lab.

Camp sessions at Pepperdine arefrom July 2 through Aug. 4.

Kanoa Aquatics has the most qualified team of expert instructors in the country. The instructors are highly experienced ocean lifeguards. With decades of experience as world class surfers, instructors come from California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Bali and Costa Rica. The Los Angeles surf camps

provide an atmosphere for summer camp students to learn the skills that will enable them to become more confident and enjoy the ocean as a life-long recreational resource. This promotes a pure surfing experience combined with instruction in ocean safety, wave knowledge and beach and surfing etiquette.
