Event to reflect culture of Israel

Keshet Chair Dance Ensemble
The many distinctive cultures of Israel and the Diaspora are woven into a tapestry of movement and sound in “Colors of Israel,” an evening of dance and music presented by Keshet Chaim Dance Ensemble and Israeli singer Noa Dori at 8:30 p.m. Sat., Feb. 25 and at 2:30 p.m. Sun., Feb. 26 in the Scherr Forum Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd.

According to show organizers, “Colors of Israel” presents the breathtaking costumes, vibrant music and exhilarating dance of Spain, Yemen, Eastern Europe, ancient Israel, and the Jews of the American West.

Using contemporary dance inspired by folk traditions, Keshet Chaim pays homage to the diversity of the Jewish experience.

“The range of ethnicities and traditions that make up the Jewish people is extraordinary,” said Keshet Chaim executive director Genie Benson. “Few communities in the world are as widereaching.”

Keshet Chaim, which means “Rainbow of Life,” is considered to be the major professional American-Israeli contemporary dance troupe in the U. S. The group’s repertoire is inspired by Jewish life in many lands and covers a vast span of history, from the time of Solomon and Sheba to the present.

Influenced by world music, the multi-ethnic roots of the Jewish people and a drive to interpret and explore Jewish values through art, Keshet Chaim has become a pioneer in the development of Jewish dance.

Dori is a classical singer and songwriter with a range of five octaves and the ability to sing pop, opera and R&B. She has performed at theaters and opera houses worldwide.

“Colors of Israel” is sponsored in part by Alliance for the ArtsThousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, The Jewish Federation, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Shalom LA, and Blazer Communications.

Tickets range from $36 to $72. For reservations, call the Civic Arts Plaza box office at (805) 449-2787.
