CLU displays AIDS Quilt

The AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at California Lutheran University's main campus beginning Fri., Dec. 1. Sections of the quilt will be shown in CLU's Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture, Samuelson Chapel and Overton Hall through Fri., Dec. 15.

Founded in 1987, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is "a poignant memorial and powerful tool for use in preventing new HIV infections," according to a CLU spokesperson. It is the largest ongoing community art project in the world.

Each block or section of the quilt measures about 12 square

feet, and a typical block consists of eight individual 3-by-6-foot panels sewn together. Virtually every one of the more than 40,000 colorful panels that make up the AIDS Quilt memorializes the life of a person lost to AIDS. Twentythree blocks will be on display in the various CLU locations.

Admission is free. An opening reception will be at 8 p.m. Fri., Dec. 1 in the Kwan Fong Gallery.

The AIDS Quilt display will coincide with CLU's observance of World AIDS Day at 7 p.m. on Tues., Dec. 5 in Samuelson Chapel.
