Math curriculum is working in local schools Mrs. Cobasko's letter in the Sept.14 Thousand Oaks Acorn regarding "Every Day Math" and Conejo Valley Unified School District's API scores omitted some very important facts. When standardized test scores are analyzed the following statistics emerge: Elementary Math (grades two-five): Percent Advanced or Proficient: 2004--70 percent, 2005--75 percent, 2006--77 percent. Since the adoption of "Every Day Math" by CVUSD, results clearly show that mathematical achievement has improved each year. Further, some of the top districts in California have adopted "Every Day Math" and, as a result, have delivered high API scores. These districts include: Del Mar, 941; El Segundo, 847; Glendale, 804; Hillsborough, 962; Montecito, 938; Palos Verdes, 898, and Poway, 858. These results do not happen by chance. They are achieved by talented teachers and support staff who work long and hard to deliver improved learning for all students. As a teacher in this district, I have found "Every Day Math" to be an excellent program for mathematical understanding and student achievement. We must prepare our students for their future, not our past. Jennifer Jackson, teacher Conejo Elementary School |
