Bill-de la Peña, Wall will be getting his votes Iquite agree with your Oct. 12 editorial listing reasons why many residents will not support Fox and Gillette for reelection to the T.O. City Council. However, you gave only three: appointing a "crony" to fill Ed Masry's remaining three-year term, the forced "resignation" of the city manager and the "city's whitewash of a grand jury report." Clearly, Fox and Gillette are guilty of abusing their power. It is really incredible that come election time Fox, Gillette and (and a former incumbent who already lost) Wilson, all claim to be "slow growth" supporters. Anyone who has followed City Council machinations knows that this is patently false and cynically deceptive on their part. What is true is that Fox and Gillette wasted about $2 million of our tax money pushing for the Hill Canyon Golf Club and they gave away $12 million to developer Caruso for the fancy strip-mall next to the Civic Arts Plaza. Fox and Gillette also supported building Lang Ranch Dam which went $6.5 million overbudget due to excess groundwater and construction problems, resulting in an ongoing lawsuit. Fox, Gillette and Wilson now support building the Lang Ranch sports complex adjacent to the dam on the Erbes Road landslide. This huge project, if built as planned with 600 parking spaces, (may) endanger residents, placing them at environmental and financial risk. Traffic on Westlake Boulevard will only become worse. We need leadership that is accountable to the citizens, leadership that allows voters their democratic right to elect their own representatives. Now, more than ever, we need leadership that will stand up to the big developers that are over-developing our city. I urge voters to support Councilmember Claudia Bill de la Peña and Planning Commission Chair Janet Wall for City Council. They have demonstrated the integrity and character to make the right decisions for all of us, not the special interests. Dr. Gerry Langer Thousand Oaks This newspaper has not endorsed in the City Council race. T.O. is a wonderful city in which to live or work. Many council members, including Fox and Gillette, are to be credited for the city Thousand Oaks has become. |
