Former T.O. Baptist pastor held in alleged sexual abuse of girl, then 7
Authorities are trying to determine if other children might have been victims of a former Thousand Oaks pastor arrested in Idaho last week on suspicion of child molestation while at Thousand Oaks Baptist School.
A woman in her early 30s, who now lives out of state, has accused the Rev. William Alan Malgren, 52, of sexually assaulting her from the time she was 7 until she turned 14, according to Ventura County Sheriff's Department Senior Dep. Eric Buschow.
The alleged molestation occurred when Malgren was pastor of Thousand Oaks Baptist Church and the girl was a student at the school that was operated by the church, Buschow said.
According to the woman's report and accounts from eyewitnesses, Malgren was asked to resign as pastor in 1989 after someone from the congregation saw him involved in what was described as inappropriate but not illegal behavior with the child, the detective said.
"This behavior was not reported at the time and it was not until later she realized she needed to tell people what really happened to her," Buschow said.
The alleged victim came forward to law enforcement for the first time about a month ago, Buschow said.
Upon investigation, deputies learned Malgren was pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Moscow, Idaho, where he was in a position of trust for the past 10 years. He'd also lived in Iowa and Washington, Buschow said.
"We felt a high state of concern and acted quickly because of the nature of the crime and because he was still acting as a pastor," Buschow said.
Malgren was brought back to Ventura County on Thurs., Oct. 5, where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of oral copulation of a child and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child. He is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 18 for an early disposition conference.
"We have found no crimes committed in our jurisdiction, but will continue to look into it," said Lt. Dave Lehnitz of the Moscow, Idaho Police Department.
Ventura County Sheriff's Department investigators are asking anyone with information about possible similar crimes committed by Malgren to contact Detective Mike Hartmann at (805) 371-8397 or Sgt. Barbara Payton at (805) 371-8392.
"They are wonderful, compassionate people who are sensitive to the emotional nature of these crimes," Buschow said. "Anyone who would like to talk to them about this is in good hands."
