Thousand Oaks resident joins Peace Corps

Anita L.D. Contini, 25, the daughter of Mario and Patricia Contini of Thousand Oaks, has been accepted into the Peace Corps.

Contini departed for Mozambique last week to be- come a primary education teacher trainer volunteer.

A graduate of Thousand Oaks High School, she attended Cal State University Channel Is- lands and earned in 2004 a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. Contini previously worked as a substitute teacher in Moorpark Unified School District.

Contini joined the Peace Corps because she loves teaching and learning, and has wanted to travel to Africa ever since she was a child.

"I want to learn all I can about another culture, to im- merse myself in it, and to take the knowledge I gain back to the students I will teach in the States," Contini said.

During the first three months of her service, Contini will live with a host family in Mozambique to become fully immersed in the country's lan- guage and culture. After acquiring the language and cultural skills necessary to assist her community, Contini will serve for two years in her host community, living at the same level as the local people.
