Trustee says he represents the district's parents

Allow me to clarify some misconceptions.

First, I am pleased with the academic performance of our schools. Very pleased. If your children have the drive, our schools have the educational opportunity.

But I am not pleased with the way the school board majority (Phelps, Stephens, Didio and Beaubian) treats the parents. Some examples: the PC text- book, the vacation schedule, the transfer of the Cypress princi- pal and Everyday Math.

Everyday Math is controver- sial and not approved by the state of California. The district had to get a special exemption. It is an experiment and our kids are the guinea pigs. I understand that local math tutors love Ev- eryday Math.

So Lennox, Andersen and I propose a math choice program option as a solution. Parents not pleased with Everyday Math would be allowed to enroll their children in math taught with tra- ditional methods.

Parents pleased with Every- day Math can continue it.

From day one, I have kept my promise to be a voice for the parents and taxpayers. For that I have been the victim of a vi- cious slander campaign pro- moted by the special interests and their surrogates that control our school district and consider me a threat to their power.

In the next election you will decide who you want to control this school district: the parents and taxpayers who pay the bills or the big liberal unions who have endorsed and given money to Phelps, Stephens and Short. Michael A. Dunn Newbury Park
