A 14-year-old Newbury Park girl walking home from school Sept. 11 was struck by a Chevrolet van as she walked east on Wendy Drive inside a marked crosswalk at Gerald Drive, CHP Officer Randy Pickens said.

According to witnesses and the driver of the northbound van, the vehicle was not exceeding the 35-mph speed limit on Wendy Drive, Pickens said.

Three witnesses gave statements to the CHP officer.

"One witness stated the girl was running or skipping across the street," Pickens said. "Another driver said he almost hit her."

At the officer's discretion, no citation was given, Pickens said.

The 5-foot-4-inch girl was taken to Northridge Hospital, where she was treated in the pediatric ICU for broken ribs and abrasions over her entire body, Pickens said.
