The Conejo Players: The Play's the Thing
The Conejo Valley is known for its beauty, both natural and manmade, its sports and leisure facilities, but not for its cultural activities.
A notable exception is the Conejo Players Theatre, a jewel of a structure on South Moorpark Road. At the home of the Conejo Players theater company, a group of volunteers present consistently entertaining productions throughout the year.
Opening as a 126-seat theater in 1964 with a production of "Teahouse of the August Moon," the Conejo Players launched its first season ticket drive in 1976.
As the half-century mark draws closer, Conejo Players still relies on a host of amateur actors, singers, dancers, directors, producers and assorted technicians to bring each production to fruition.
With the exception of some musical productions which require the skills of an independent contractor, no participants are paid salaries and every production relies completely on the skill and hard work of a host of talented individuals, most of whom have full-time "day jobs."
In addition to five mainstage productions, the Conejo Players also offers several afternoon theater productions on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as children's theater.
This year's mainstage productions include: "The Sound of Music," "Angel Street" (the basis for the movie "Gaslight"), the popular comedy "You Can't Take it With You" and "110 in the Shade" (based on "The Rainmaker"). Afternoon theater productions include "And Then There Were None," by Agatha Christie, "Blithe Spirit," and "The World Goes Round," a musical based on the songs of Kander and Ebb.
If one were to measure the success of a production by the energy and dedication of all of those connected with it, the Players' productions would outshine many of those by professional groups with lofty credentials.
Subscriptions to the 2007 season are now being accepted. Prices are extremely reasonable, the venue is close to home and you'll be supporting a vital theatrical organization in the Conejo Valley.
